Two Sub‑Generations: Mark One and Dot 2

The 996 is split into two distinct sub‑generations. The "Mark One" or 996.1 models were built from 1998 until the end of 2001, while the later "dot 2" models received a facelift and began after the 2002 model year.

Performance Milestones – GT3 and Engine Upgrade

In 1999 Porsche introduced the 911 GT3 (type 996), the first time the legendary GT3 badge appeared on a 911. The 2002 rework increased engine displacement to 3,596 cc and boosted power to 320 PS, and the 911 Targa also received updates during this period.
