About this part
The transmission on your M5 E28 sends engine power to the drivetrain and keeps revs in their usable range. Crunching gears, gears jumping out or whining bearings signal wear that rarely pays to repair.
Frequently asked questions
What should I check when buying a transmission for the BMW M5?
The gearbox code on the type plate of your M5 E28 decides fitment, because ratios and connections differ per engine variant. Confirm whether it is manual or automatic and whether add-on parts such as the selector shaft and sensors are included.
What does a transmission cost compared to a repair?
A tested used gearbox is usually far cheaper than a rebuild with new bearings and synchros. Ask for mileage, a test-run video and warranty, and budget for shaft seals, gear oil and possibly the clutch.
